The Coilgram series tells the history of blockchain through coiled representations of iconic moments of several blockchains, identified by specific blocks of the chain. Essentially Coilgram is an algorithm that uses the hash of a block to produce a corresponding unique artistic representation which is tokenized on the Ethereum blockchain as NFT.

A hash is an hexadecimal number (typically of 64 figures) that digests a message of arbitrarily length (some collisions are possible). For instance, using the cryptographic hash function SHA-256, the text Hello world hashes to:

EVA is a generative art project that stems from the idea of representing the genetic code (DNA) in an artistic way. The DNA represents the code of every living being; this code was the inspiration to write another code — programmable — that generated the artwork. The result was a fortunate meeting of codes: the first executed over millennia by nature and the second executed in the blink of an eye by the machine, mediated by the intervention of man. Man, machine and nature merge and collaborate in this artistic project that takes an evocative name: EVA.

Comirnaty is the name of the well-known Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for active immunisation to prevent COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus. We made an artwork dedicated to Comirnaty. Its story is told below.

When I decided to get the COVID-19 vaccine, I immediately inquired about its contents. First, I discovered that it had a beautiful, almost theatrical name: Comirnaty. Soon after, I read the equally poetic list of excipients

2-[(polyethylene glycol)-2000]-N,N-ditetradecylacetamide
Cholesterol; Potassium chloride; Potassium dihydrogen phosphate
Sodium chloride; Disodium phosphate dihydrate; Sucrose
Water for injections

So I thought of staging these characters, so indecipherable. After all, we know exactly…

A Lissajous figure is the graph of a system of parametric equations

x = A sin(at + α)
y = B sin(bt + β)

which describe complex harmonic motion. This family of curves was investigated by Nathaniel Bowditch (an American mathematician remembered for his work on ocean navigation) in 1815, and later in 1857 by Jules Antoine Lissajous (a French physicist).

“The computer may be potentially as valuable a tool to the arts as it has already proven itself to be in the sciences” Michael Noll

Generative Art Recoded is an effort to preserve pioneering generative artworks by translating them into a modern programming language (Processing). Indeed, in most cases, the original code underlying these early masterpieces got lost, unfortunately. My goal is also to offer a learning resource of Processing for both art and science students using the same challenging process I followed:

  1. start from the original artwork;
  2. reverse engineer the code;
  3. match the outcomes of the code with the…

The origins of blockchain go back to the crypto-anarchism and cypherpunk movements of the late 80s. These activists advocate widespread use of strong cryptography and privacy-enhancing technologies, in an effort to protect their privacy, their political freedom, and their economic freedom. The Crypto Anarchist Manifesto by Timothy C. May dates back to mid-1988 and was distributed to some like-minded techno-anarchists at the Crypto ‘88 conference:

Combined with emerging information markets, crypto anarchy will create a liquid market for any and all material which can be put into words and pictures. Timothy C. May, Crypto Anarchist Manifesto, 1988

In his recent book The Formula, Albert-László Barabási draws an interesting parallel between the concepts of performance and success.

Performance refers to how we played and the playground can be any one, for instance a 100-meter flat race, a contemporary dance show, a scientific article, a macrobiotic dish. Performance depends on us, not on the others. It’s an internal variable, an individual one. It is influenced by the quality we have injected into our work, the result of the passion and skills we have put into it.

Success is often another story. It is the recognition we receive from others…

A prime oddity

“The list of prime numbers is the heart rate of mathematics, but it is a pulse stimulated by a powerful caffeine-based cocktail.” Marcus Du Sautoy

An artistic visualization of all primes contained in the first million of natural numbers (high resolution version). We call such a visualization a Primenuum. The Primenuum artworks are tokenized as digital art on SuperRare gallery

A prime number (or prime) is a natural number greater than 1 that cannot be formed by multiplying two smaller natural numbers. Equivalently, primes are the numbers with no divisors besides 1 and the number itself. For instance, 17 is prime, but 21 is not prime, since 21 = 3 · 7, hence 3 and 7 are divisors of 21.

Primes are central in number theory because of the fundamental theorem of arithmetic: every natural…
